How to Prepare for SSC CPO (Sub-Inspector) 2026

CPO is unique because it demands BOTH academic and physical excellence — start physical training (running, jumps, shot put practice) at least 4-6 months before the exam. Many candidates with high Paper 1 scores get eliminated at PET because they neglected fitness.

Paper 1 difficulty is similar to SSC CGL Tier 1 — focus on speed and accuracy. 30 minutes per section means you have ~36 seconds per question. Build that pace through topic-wise practice with strict timing.

English Paper 2 is the differentiator — 200 questions covering ONLY English at graduate level is heavy. Build vocabulary daily (10 new words with sentences), revise grammar weekly, and practice longer reading comprehension passages (5-7 paragraphs each).

Reasoning and GA are scoring sections — prioritise them for high accuracy. CPO GA leans towards static GK (specific Constitutional Articles, freedom struggle dates, sports records) more than current affairs.

In the last 2 months, attempt 2-3 full-length Paper 1 mocks per week WITH sectional timing. Practice the rhythm of switching sections every 30 minutes — many candidates lose marks because they cannot adapt to forced section switches.

Sequence the four stages in your calendar because they demand different things. Paper 1 is the academic gate — 200 questions, four sections of 50, 30 minutes each and a 0.25 penalty per wrong answer. The PET/PST comes only for those who clear Paper 1, so the physical routine has to run in parallel with study rather than after it. Paper 2 then adds a second 200-question English paper to the merit total, and the medical examination closes the process. A candidate who studies for Paper 1 alone and treats the rest as formalities is the one who loses the seat late.

Quantitative Aptitude at CPO level is arithmetic-heavy: percentages, profit and loss, ratio, average, time and work, speed and distance, simple and compound interest, plus a steady share of geometry, mensuration, trigonometry and one data-interpretation set. Cover each chapter with a formula sheet and 40 timed questions, then move to mixed sets of 25 in 15 minutes. Most candidates lose the section not on hard questions but on slow ones — fix a 45-second rule and come back to anything that runs over it.

Because Paper 1 and Paper 2 marks are simply added for the final merit, English effectively carries 250 of the 400 written marks (50 in Paper 1 plus 200 in Paper 2). Build the preparation in that proportion: an hour of English every day from the start, split between grammar rules, a vocabulary list from previous papers, one reading passage and one exercise in cloze or sentence rearrangement. Paper 2 papers from previous years are the best guide to the difficulty level, which is higher than Paper 1's English section.

Physical preparation should be measured, not just done. Time your 100-metre and 1.6-kilometre runs every fortnight, record long-jump and high-jump distances, and practise shot put with the correct weight for your category. Get your height, chest (with expansion) and weight measured against the notification's standards before you apply, because the PST is pass or fail and no amount of Paper 1 marks can offset a short chest expansion.
