About SSC MTS — Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff Examination

The SSC Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) exam is the entry-level recruitment for matriculate (10th-pass) candidates seeking Group C non-technical posts across central government ministries, departments and subordinate offices. It attracts ~50 lakh applicants every year, making it one of India's largest government job exams.

MTS recruits for posts like Peon, Daftary, Jamadar, Junior Gestetner Operator, Chowkidar, Safaiwala, Mali and other support roles across CBIC, CBN, Ministry of Defence, and various central government offices. The pay scale is Level-1 (₹18,000-₹56,900) with allowances.

Since 2023, MTS uses a single-day computer-based examination conducted in TWO sessions on the same day — no Tier 1 / Tier 2 terminology. Session I is qualifying (must clear cutoff) and Session II decides merit. Notably, Session I has NO negative marking — unique to MTS among SSC exams.

Preparation Strategy

Start with NCERT Class 8-10 Math textbook — it covers everything in MTS Numerical Ability without overshooting the level. Solve Class 8 chapters first, then move to 9 and 10 over a month.

Reasoning at the MTS level rewards practice over technique. Solve 15-20 questions a day from basic series, coding, blood relations and direction sense. Most questions follow simple repeatable patterns — pattern recognition comes with volume.

General Awareness: focus on well-known static GK (states + capitals, freedom fighters, major rivers, basic Constitutional articles) and last 6 months of current affairs. Don't go deep into history dates or specific Article numbers — that's CGL territory, not MTS.

English: build vocabulary daily with 5 common words plus their usage. Practice basic grammar (subject-verb agreement, tenses) from any Class 10 grammar book. Read short news articles (Hindu Junior, BBC simple English) to build comprehension speed.

Take 2-3 full-length mock tests in the last 3 weeks to handle the 45-minute time pressure of each session. The good news: Session I has no negative marking, so attempt EVERY question — even guesses give 25% chance of right answer. In Session II, only attempt questions you're 70%+ confident in.

Recent Changes to Know

  • Since 2023 cycle, MTS no longer uses Tier 1 / Tier 2 terminology — it's a single-day exam with Session I and Session II.
  • Session I (Numerical + Reasoning) has ZERO negative marking — unique among all SSC exams. Attempt every question.
  • Session II (GA + English) has -1 negative marking and +3 for correct answers. Be selective.
  • Final merit is based solely on Session II marks — Session I is purely qualifying.
  • Havaldar posts (CBIC / CBN) recruited under the same MTS notification but with additional PET/PST stages.
