SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) is one of the most accessible routes into a central-government job after Class 12. The syllabus overlaps heavily with SSC CGL, so a CHSL plan doubles as a foundation for CGL later. This guide uses two things most guides don't: the exact 2026 scheme from the official SSC notice, and a topic count from real 2024 Tier-I papers in Kamiyab's question bank.

SSC CHSL 2026 exam pattern
Tier-I exam pattern
| Subject | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language (Basic Knowledge) | 25 | 50 | 15 minutes |
| General Intelligence | 25 | 50 | 15 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill) | 25 | 50 | 15 minutes |
| General Awareness | 25 | 50 | 15 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 200 | 60 minutes |
Each subject has its own 15-minute sectional timer (20 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe). You can no longer save time in a strong section and spend it on a weak one, so practise every section against its own 15-minute clock. There is negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer.
Tier-II exam pattern
| Section | Subject | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section-I | Mathematical Abilities | 30 | 90 | 30 minutes |
| Section-I | Reasoning and General Intelligence | 30 | 90 | 30 minutes |
| Section-II | English Language and Comprehension | 40 | 120 | 40 minutes |
| Section-II | General Awareness | 20 | 60 | 20 minutes |
| Section-III | Computer Knowledge Test | 15 | 45 | 15 minutes |
| Section-IV | Skill Test (DEO) or Typing Test (LDC/JSA) | — | — | 15 minutes (DEO) · 10 minutes (LDC/JSA) |
Sections I to III are held in Session-I (2 hours 15 minutes) and the skill or typing test in Session-II, on the same day. Every Tier-II question in Sections I to III carries 3 marks.
Most-asked topics in SSC CHSL Tier-I (Kamiyab data)
Kamiyab's question bank holds real questions from 10 shifts of SSC CHSL 2024 Tier-I. Counting them by topic shows where the marks actually came from. These counts come from our sample, not an official SSC breakdown, so treat them as a guide to priorities rather than a guarantee for your shift.
English
| Topic | Questions | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Sentence improvement | 45 | 24% |
| Antonyms | 35 | 19% |
| Error spotting | 26 | 14% |
| Synonyms | 24 | 13% |
| Cloze test | 23 | 12% |
| Idioms and phrases | 20 | 11% |
| Spelling | 11 | 6% |
| One-word substitution | 1 | under 1% |
Vocabulary — antonyms, synonyms, idioms, spelling and one-word substitution together — made up 91 of the 185 questions, almost half. Grammar (sentence improvement and error spotting) made up another 71. Twenty minutes of vocabulary every day is the single biggest lever in CHSL English.
General Awareness
| Topic | Questions | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Static GK | 20 | 22% |
| Science | 18 | 19% |
| Polity | 15 | 16% |
| Geography | 12 | 13% |
| Current affairs | 11 | 12% |
| History | 10 | 11% |
| Economics | 7 | 8% |
Current affairs was only 11 of 93 questions. Static GK, science and polity together were 53 — more than half — so revising static topics pays off more than chasing daily news.
SSC CHSL section-wise preparation strategy
| Section | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| Quantitative Aptitude | Arithmetic first (percentage, ratio, average, time and work, profit and loss), then basic algebra, geometry and data interpretation — the most improvable section with daily practice |
| General Intelligence | Analogy, classification, series, coding-decoding and non-verbal reasoning — high-frequency question types you can learn to solve quickly |
| English | Daily vocabulary (antonyms, synonyms, idioms, spelling) plus sentence improvement and error spotting — together almost 9 in 10 of the English questions in our 2024 sample |
| General Awareness | Static GK, science and polity first, then current affairs for the last six months before your exam |
6-week SSC CHSL study plan before Tier-I
| Week | Focus | Daily target |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Take one full mock to find your weak topics; start a mistakes notebook | 20 new words · one 15-minute sectional test |
| Week 2 | Quant arithmetic, plus English sentence improvement and error spotting | Two 15-minute sectional tests · 20 words |
| Week 3 | Reasoning, plus static GK (science and polity) | Two 15-minute sectional tests · one static GK chapter |
| Week 4 | A full mock every second day; current affairs of the last six months | Review every wrong answer the same day |
| Week 5 | A full mock every day under the sectional timer | Revise the mistakes notebook |
| Week 6 | Light revision and previous-year questions; no new topics | One sectional test per subject · keep your sleep in line with your exam shift time |
How to prepare for SSC CHSL without coaching
- Download the official notice from ssc.gov.in and use its syllabus as your checklist.
- Solve previous-year questions topic by topic — they show what SSC actually asks.
- Take mocks with the same 15-minute sectional timer as the real exam.
- Keep one mistakes notebook and revise it every week; most marks are lost to repeat mistakes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Practising only full 60-minute papers — with the 15-minute sectional timer, train each section on its own clock.
- Skipping daily vocabulary — almost half of the English questions in our sample were vocabulary.
- Chasing current affairs over static GK — static topics made up more than half of General Awareness in our sample.
- Guessing blindly — each wrong answer costs 0.50 marks in Tier-I.
- Taking mocks without reviewing them — note every mistake and revisit it before the next mock.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the SSC CHSL 2026 Tier-I exam?
SSC's notice of 1 October 2026 schedules Tier-I (computer-based) from 30 November to 31 December 2026. Your own date and shift appear on your admit card on ssc.gov.in.
Is there sectional timing in SSC CHSL 2026?
Yes. Tier-I is 60 minutes with a sectional timer of 15 minutes for each of the four subjects (20 minutes each for candidates eligible for a scribe). Tier-II sections are also separately timed.
Which posts are filled through SSC CHSL 2026?
Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant (Pay Level-2), Data Entry Operator (Pay Level-4 and Level-5) and Data Entry Operator Grade ‘A’ (Pay Level-4).
Is SSC CHSL easier than SSC CGL?
CHSL is pitched at the higher-secondary level and is generally considered more accessible than CGL, but the syllabus overlaps heavily. Preparing for CHSL builds a strong base if you plan to attempt CGL later.
How long does SSC CHSL preparation take?
With a Class-12 base, 3–5 months of consistent, section-wise practice is realistic. The biggest gains come from daily timed practice and reviewing mistakes, not from buying more books.
Which section is most scoreable in SSC CHSL?
General Awareness — once you've revised static GK and kept up with current affairs, it's the fastest to answer accurately. Quantitative Aptitude is the most improvable with daily practice.
