About RPF Constable — Railway Protection Force Constable Recruitment

RPF Constable is the entry-level uniformed post in the Railway Protection Force, the armed security force responsible for protecting railway property, passengers and freight under the Railway Protection Force Act, 1957. Selected constables are deployed across India's 18 railway zones at stations, in trains, parcel offices, and dedicated RPF posts.

RPF and the Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) together form one of India's largest armed police forces. Constables work closely with state Government Railway Police (GRP) but report up through the Ministry of Railways, not the home ministry. New recruits undergo about 9-12 months of training at the RPF Training Academy in Lucknow (Jagjivan Ram Centre) plus regional training schools before deployment.

Selection runs through a three-stage process — (i) Computer-Based Test (CBT), (ii) Physical Efficiency Test (PET) & Physical Measurement Test (PMT), and (iii) Document Verification (DV). The CBT is the only merit-deciding stage; PET and PMT are qualifying. Failing any qualifying stage disqualifies you regardless of CBT marks. A Medical Examination follows after DV as a post-DV appointment-fitness check (not a selection or merit stage) to confirm the candidate meets the required medical standard before appointment.

Who the exam suits: candidates who have finished Class 10, are within the age band, and can combine a study routine with regular physical training. The CBT is set at matriculation level in three sections — General Awareness, Arithmetic and Reasoning — so it rewards steady revision of a known syllabus rather than advanced study. The work itself is shift-based, uniformed and mobile: escorting trains, guarding stations, yards and parcel offices, handling passenger complaints and theft cases, and coordinating with the Government Railway Police, so the recruitment tests fitness and measurements as seriously as it tests marks.

How to use this page: the sections below give the eligibility conditions as the notification states them, the stage-by-stage pattern with marks and timings, the syllabus for each CBT section, a preparation plan that runs the written and physical work together, and the important dates for the current cycle. Read the pattern and the PET standards first, because the most common failure in this recruitment is not the CBT but a candidate who applied without checking that their height, chest expansion or run timing met the notified standard; then work through the syllabus section by section with the weightage the pattern gives each one.

Conducted by: Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) on behalf of Railway Protection Force (RPF), Ministry of Railways, Government of India

Exam Pattern

Stage-by-stage breakdown of the recruitment process.

Stage 1: Computer-Based Test (CBT)

Mode
Online CBT, single shift
Sections
General Awareness · Arithmetic · General Intelligence & Reasoning
Questions
120 (GA: 50 · Arithmetic: 35 · Reasoning: 35)
Marks
120 (1 mark per correct)
Duration
90 minutes (120 minutes for PwBD candidates entitled to scribe)
Negative marking
-1/3 mark per wrong answer

GA carries the heaviest weight (50 of 120 = 42%) reflecting the security context — defence operations, RPF history, CAPFs, Indian Railways general facts. Qualifying marks: UR 35%, OBC-NCL/SC 30%, ST 25%. How the stage works: the 120 questions are served in one 90-minute block with no sectional lock, so you can move between General Awareness, Arithmetic and Reasoning in any order. A correct answer earns 1 mark and a wrong one loses one-third, which puts the break-even accuracy at 25% — attempt when you can rule out an option, leave it when you cannot. Marks are normalised across shifts before the shortlist for PET/PMT is drawn, and that shortlist is prepared RRB-wise (by the zone you applied to), category-wise and separately for male and female candidates, usually as a multiple of the vacancies notified. The CBT score you carry into the final merit is this normalised score; PET and PMT add nothing to it, so a higher CBT rank is the only way to improve your final position.

Stage 2: Physical Efficiency Test (PET) — Qualifying

Mode
Physical performance test at RPF training grounds
Sections
Run · Long Jump · High Jump
Questions
Marks
Qualifying only — no marks added to merit
Duration
Male: 1600m run in 5 min 45 sec, long jump 14 ft, high jump 4 ft. Female: 800m run in 3 min 40 sec, long jump 9 ft, high jump 3 ft.
Negative marking

2 chances are given for long jump and high jump. Run is single attempt. Failure in any one event = PET failure = disqualification. Practical points: the run is held on a marked track or ground in the morning session, so train at the same hour and on similar ground; wear the shoes you have trained in, since a blister on the day ends the attempt; and arrive with a light meal two to three hours earlier. Ex-servicemen are exempt from PET as per the notification, but must still clear PMT and DV. Long-jump and high-jump attempts are recorded by the RRB's officials and the better of the two counts, so treat the first attempt as a safe clearance and the second as the improvement. Candidates who are injured on the day cannot claim a re-test, which is why the notification asks you to appear only if fit; a medical certificate does not substitute for the event.

Stage 3: Physical Measurement Test (PMT) — Qualifying

Mode
Height and chest measurement
Sections
Height (all candidates) · Chest with expansion (males only)
Questions
Marks
Qualifying only
Duration
Same day or next, after PET
Negative marking

Measurement done by RRB-empanelled medical officers. Below minimum standard = disqualification. Relaxations apply for ST, Gorkha, Garhwali, Sikkimese, Hill area candidates as per notification.

Stage 4: Document Verification (DV)

Mode
Document examination at regional RRB office
Sections
Educational certificates · Date-of-birth proof · Category certificate · Identity proof · Photographs · Address proof
Questions
Marks
Duration
Variable — 2-4 hours per candidate
Negative marking

All claims in your application form must match documents. Discrepancies disqualify. Carry original + 2 self-attested photocopies of each document.

Medical Examination (post-DV appointment-fitness check)

Mode
Medical board at railway hospital
Sections
General fitness · Vision (incl. colour vision) · Hearing · BP · BMI · Disease screening
Questions
Marks
Qualifying only — Medical Standard B-1 (good distant vision, no colour blindness, no contagious disease)
Duration
1 day at designated railway hospital
Negative marking

Conducted after DV as an appointment-fitness check, not a selection or merit stage. Vision standards — 6/9 in better eye, 6/12 in worse eye (without glasses), normal colour vision, no chronic disease. Failed candidates may seek a single re-medical from a higher medical board.

Preparation Strategy

PET is the silent killer — many candidates clear CBT comfortably but fail the run timing. Start physical training EARLY (at least 4-6 months out). Practice 1600m timed runs 3x per week, build to 5 min 30 sec to have a safety margin over the 5:45 limit. Long jump and high jump need technique training, not just strength.

GA is your highest-leverage section (42% of marks). Prioritise: Indian Railways general facts (18 zones, Vande Bharat, Konkan, RPF role), well-known defence operations with correct year-place pairs (Vijay = Kargil 1999, Meghdoot = Siachen 1984, Pawan = Sri Lanka 1987-90), and basic Polity (President, PM, well-known Articles 14/19/21/32). Avoid obscure facts.

Arithmetic and Reasoning are scoring sections at 10th-pass level. Don't waste time on graduate-tier shortcuts (CI difference formulas, equal-SP loss tricks) — RPF Constable doesn't test those. Focus on accurate, single-step solutions with speed.

Read newspapers daily for current affairs (last 6-12 months). Focus on government schemes, defence appointments, Indian Railways news. One monthly current-affairs digest is sufficient — don't over-prepare beyond Constable level.

Practice 2-3 mock tests per week in the final 6 weeks. Time yourself strictly to 90 minutes. Identify weak sections and revisit fundamentals. Maintain accuracy above 90% — negative marking at -1/3 means random guessing hurts.

Strengthen your application form before submission — your category certificate, height/chest measurement (self-declared at application), and DOB proof must be exact. PMT failures often happen because candidates over-claimed height. Measure accurately at home before applying.

Structure the CBT preparation around its 50-35-35 split. General Awareness carries 50 of the 120 questions, so it deserves half of your study hours; Arithmetic and Reasoning share the rest. With 90 minutes for 120 questions you have 45 seconds each, and the one-third negative marking means the break-even accuracy is 25% — attempt when you can rule out one option, leave it when you cannot. Most successful candidates attempt 100-110 questions with accuracy around 85%, and reach that by drilling Arithmetic and Reasoning until they take under 45 minutes combined, leaving the remaining time for a careful pass through General Awareness.

Prepare the security-and-railway part of General Awareness deliberately, because it is what makes RPF's paper different from other railway exams. Keep a notebook on: the Railway Protection Force Act 1957 and the RPF's mandate; the RPSF, GRP and the difference between them; Indian Railways structure (zones, headquarters, the Railway Board, production units); flagship rail projects and trains; the Central Armed Police Forces and their roles; India's defence organisation, ranks and major exercises; and the last eight months of railway, defence and security news. Add the standard static list — Constitution basics, modern history, geography, everyday science, sports and awards — that fills the rest of the section.

Arithmetic at RPF Constable level is Class 10: number system, LCM and HCF, percentages, ratio, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, speed and distance, mensuration and basic algebra. Learn each chapter with a one-page formula sheet and 40 timed questions, then move to mixed sets. Reasoning is even more pattern-based — series, analogy, classification, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction, Venn diagrams, mirror images, paper folding, syllogism and simple puzzles — and the same twelve question types repeat every year, so previous-year papers are the best practice material.

Run the physical and written preparation as one schedule. Three mornings a week of running with timed 1600-metre (men) or 800-metre (women) trials, two sessions of jump practice, and a monthly self-measurement of height and chest expansion against the notification's standards. Study in the evenings with a fixed rotation — GA on all days, Arithmetic and Reasoning on alternate days — and one full-length CBT mock every weekend under the 90-minute clock. In the last month, taper the running to keep it injury-free, and shift study time to revising the GA notebook and the mock error log.
