How to Prepare for RRB Technician 2026

Decide your grade FIRST — Grade III (ITI) and Grade I (Signal) have completely different CBT 2 papers. Grade III needs trade-specific revision (Fitter / Electrician / Wireman / etc.); Grade I Signal needs disciplinary Signal & Telecom prep. CBT 1 is the same for both, so build that base first.

CBT 1 is just a screening — but it's a sharp cut-off. Aim for 75+ out of 100 by drilling Math, Reasoning, General Science (NCERT 10) and basic Indian + Railway GA. The questions are 10th-pass level but volume is heavy at 100 questions in 90 minutes.

For Grade III Part B (trade): revisit your NCVT / SCVT ITI syllabus book for your trade — questions repeat from the standard syllabus. Part B is qualifying at 35% (30% for reserved) and is NOT counted in final merit, so don't over-invest. Just clear it cleanly.

For Grade III final merit, Part A is everything. Use the same 1/3 negative marking rule — solve only what you're sure of. Math + Reasoning are scoring; GA needs daily Railway-themed current affairs.

For Grade I (Signal), use a Signal & Telecom textbook (Sharma & Gupta is a common reference) plus standard electronics texts for semiconductor / digital logic basics. Past disciplinary papers (RRB JE S&T) are very useful — the depth is similar.

Solve at least 3-5 past RRB Technician / ALP / JE papers under timed conditions. The Reasoning and Math patterns repeat heavily — series, coding, percentages, profit-loss, time-work, basic mensuration appear every year.

Read your own grade's CBT split before you build a timetable. For Grade III the paper is 100 questions in 90 minutes — Mathematics 25, Reasoning 25, General Science 40 and General Awareness 10 — so General Science is the largest single block and Mathematics plus Reasoning together match it. For Grade I (Signal) the same 100 questions are General Awareness 10, Reasoning 15, Computer Basics 20, Mathematics 20 and Basic Science and Engineering 35. In both cases a wrong answer costs one-third of a mark, and the RRB normalises across shifts, so the aim is steady accuracy above 85% rather than a high attempt count.

For the Grade III paper, General Science from NCERT Classes 9 and 10 is the deciding section: motion, force and work, sound, light and reflection, electricity and magnetism, heat, the periodic table, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds, cell biology, life processes, nutrition and diseases, and environment. Make one-page notes per chapter with the formulas and the standard numerical types, then drill 40-question timed sets. Add the trade-specific basics your ITI syllabus covered — tools, measurements, materials, safety practices, electrical fundamentals — because the science questions are often set in a workshop context.

For the Grade I (Signal) paper, the 35-question Basic Science and Engineering block is where selection happens. Cover engineering drawing conventions, units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity (Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, power), levers and simple machines, occupational safety, environment education and IT literacy. The 20-question Computer Basics block is a scoring one — architecture, input and output devices, storage, operating systems, MS Office basics, networking and internet terms, and security — if you spend a week on it early.

Set a 12-week plan. Weeks 1-6: cover every syllabus chapter once, with a formula or fact sheet per chapter and a 20-question set the same day. Weeks 7-10: previous-year RRB Technician, ALP and Group D papers under the clock, one every third day, with the wrong answers logged by cause. Weeks 11-12: two full-length mocks a week at your likely shift time, daily revision of the sheets and the error log, and no new topics. Keep your ITI or diploma certificates, mark sheets, category proof and photo ID ready for document verification, and get your eyesight and colour vision tested early because the medical standard is post-specific and strictly applied.
